Based on the immediate success of the Vaporfly 4% (the commercially available version of Nike’s “Breaking 2” racing shoe), it was only a matter of time before we saw its ZoomX foam rolled into other shoes. First up: the Pegasus 35 Turbo.

Runners are no stranger to lớn the name Pegasus; that workhorse shoe is on its 35th iteration. For decades, the Peg has been a do-it-all model that can handle high mileage as well as it can upticks in speed. But, that daily trainer is a bit too heavy và a little too soft lớn really be used for any kind of speedwork. This all-new “Peg Turbo” is designed to keep that legendary fit & feeling, but delivers the lightweight sensation of a racing flat.

To vì so, Nike gave it the aforementioned lightweight foam, which is exceptionally springy. In the Runner’s World Shoe Lab, we found its energy return lớn be on par with shoes using Adidas’s Boost midsole. That’s going lớn deliver you a bouncy, fast sensation underfoot, even though ZoomX is much lighter than Boost.

“This shoe is fast—like Reebok FloatRide Run Fast kind of fast,” gushed one tester. “Much like that shoe, I found myself running 30 to lớn 45 seconds faster per mile on a training run without even realizing it.”

But, the Peg Turbo isn’t just fast. It’s also exceptionally soft, especially in the heel. So you’re assured a protective, well-cushioned ride over long runs but will still have tỷ lệ thoát to your step so you can motor along more quickly when the mood strikes.

“One of the best shoes with special cushioning that I’ve run in,” said another tester. “You really do feel that extra bounce in your step, & it makes you want khổng lồ go a little faster.”

The Magic of the Midsole

The key lớn the Peg Turbo, as noted earlier, is the lightweight foam in the midsole. Lightweight foams are nothing new, of course. But typically, feathery EVA midsoles compress easily và are slow lớn recover their shape. ZoomX, by comparison, is still highly compressible under your weight (giving you the soft landing), but it rebounds quickly khổng lồ propel you forward.

The foam is made from Pebax, which is more typically used for plastic bridges & other molded parts in shoes. For example, Mizuno has used it in a Wave plate. Pebax has a lower density than some thermoplastic alternatives (thus, it’s lighter), but is also flexible, resists impact, và returns energy. Those properties remain when it’s blown into a foam.

Nike says this new foam weighs roughly one-third as much as Cushlon—the midsole material you’ll find in the ordinary Pegasus—yet delivers more cushioning than that shoe. It also delivers greater energy return—Nike reports ZoomX returns 85 percent. In tests of running-shoe cushioning systems at the Runner’s World Shoe Lab, we typically see “energy return” (the percentage of energy đầu vào that is recovered; the rest is generally lost as heat) in the 40 to lớn 60 percent range, with Adidas’s Boost topping the charts near 70 percent. The Peg Turbo measured 69 percent energy return in our lab. (Our measurements come from an impact demo of a full sole unit, which includes rubber outsoles & layers of glue.)

Because of the foam’s light weight, Nike is able to use more of it, too. The stack heights (a measure of all materials that separate your foot from the road) for both versions of the Pegasus are nearly identical. In the case of the Peg Turbo, that’s very thick for a go-fast shoe.

In our real-world testing of the shoe, we found the Peg Turbo is exceptionally versatile. I wore it in the Mt. Washington Road Race, a 7.5-mile run that ascends 4,600 feet khổng lồ the mountain’s summit. For such a climb, you want a firm forefoot that doesn’t waste energy on toe off. This shoe delivered, with enough pop khổng lồ power uphill. When I reach the summit finish line, however, I change shoes, opting for something squishy soft like a Hoka One One for the long jog back downhill. This year, I wore the Peg Turbo for the descent, too, finding it adequately soft for such a punishing plunge—and my legs were no worse for the wear in the following days than in previous years.

A Lightweight Rubber WebThe outsole is designed to lớn give you traction at speed, but limits the use of rubber so you won’t be slowed. Nike used a grid of pentagon-shaped nubs in the heel và forefoot, combined with a rim of rubber around the entire perimeter of the sole. Together, it’s enough to lớn provide durability where you need it most. And since ZoomX foam by itself wears quickly, especially when it grinds against pavement, Nike added a thin layer of React foam khổng lồ the bottom to help with durability (it also stabilizes the ZoomX foam in the midsole). Our thử nghiệm team reports that the sole delivered reliable grip on dry, paved roads.

A Racy Upper

Clad in a translucent mesh, the upper on the Peg Turbo received mixed reviews from our thử nghiệm staff. First, & most notable, is that the shoe runs a bit loose. Across the board, we all went down a half-size from what we typically wear in Nikes. The forefoot is wide and roomy, and the mesh upper is exceptionally flexible và deconstructed—there are no overlays to lớn hold you in place.

*

Farther back, though, the fit is more dialed. Flywires around both sides of the midfoot connect the laces directly into the midsole, giving you a locked down fit there. & the heel proved to lớn be narrow; a thin heel counter provides just enough structure to lớn keep you centered over the foam.

We appreciated the curve of the tall collar, which moves the material away from the Achilles tendon to avoid any rubbing or irritation. It’s really a bit of a cosmetic flourish that just makes the shoe look fast, much lượt thích the pointed heel. Nike claims that feature made the Vaporfly more aerodynamic by reducing drag, the turbulent wake behind an object as air passes it. However, peak drag when running occurs while the toes are pointed down và air flows over the đứng top surface of the upper. In any case, it looks sporty, but has minimal performance benefit.
